General Sewing Items

Things you may already have in your sewing kit

So, what do you need to start making lace?
Picture
Surprisingly, you have at home a number of the things you need to start.  They are in your basic sewing kit.
  • sharp embroidery scissors
  • tape measure
  • old make up bag
  • glass headed pins
  • sewing pins
  • sewing neeedles
  • needle threader
  • knitting stich holder

Old make up bag?  Yes, an old, clean make up bag makes a great storage bag for your basic supplies until you can treat yourself to a notions bag.
Sewing pins will get you going too for your first pieces.  Tradionally, lace makers use brass pins as they didn't rust but for your first pieces good quality stainless steel pins will be just fine and some old fashion glass headed pins will help you separate your bobbins and keep them in place when you stop - thread some ribbon through the spangels and pin in place or use a knitting stitch holder.

My travelling haberdashery has, even if I say so myself, a fantastic selection of scissors, pins and other items - etuicoterie.
